Disciplined, goal-focused, long-term investing continues to be a winning strategy. But that doesn’t mean you can’t take advantage of select near-term opportunities—when the market presents them. And doing so within a prudently concentrated portfolio—aligned with your own personal goals—is usually what separates the long-term winners from the rest.

I’ve been a professional investor for over two decades, and that—combined with my formal finance education from “good” schools—gives me valuable perspective. I’ve learned that overcoming the biases of both groups, education and the street, especially across market cycles, is a legitimate competitive advantage.

And despite the internet typically turning a blind eye—it also means you darn well better pay attention to the tax consequences of your investment activities—because a few wrong moves can compound over time and wipe away far more alpha than your investment strategies will ever generate.

I write Mark’s Opportunities to highlight attractive opportunities for investors to consider. For risk management purposes, I always invest through a prudently concentrated long-term portfolio because those two things (diversification and long-term capital) are about as close to a free lunch as you are ever going to get.

I also know that long-term compound growth is one of the most powerful wealth-building forces in the history of the world. But without the liquidity to meet your needs, it’s all for naught.

Be smart people—do what is right for you.
